General Interpretation

The Hermit

The Hermit is a card that encompasses several types of relationships and is very spiritually oriented. The relationships it points to include: our relationships with ourselves, our relationships with Spirit/God/Universe, and our relationship to life.

Look beyond the surface interpretation of being a hermit, being apart from everyone else and consider what people do when they are hermits, generally speaking: they contemplate, and deepen their spiritual experiences.

The Hermit Upright Meanings Step-by-Step

Friends, Friendships, and Family

You may have been spending so much time with your friends and family that you are exhausted. This card is a very strong suggestion that you need to take some time alone. If you tend to be somewhat extroverted, some people will be taken aback by what seems to them to be a sudden personality change but rest assured the people that really care about you will understand. This is a good time also to consider whether you want to stay friends with all the people you currently socialize with. Are they real friends? All of them?

Love and Relationships

Sometimes the appearance of the Hermit indicates that a relationship from your past could start up again. That’s not necessarily a bad thing of course, but on the other hand there was a reason why it didn’t work out the first go around. Take the time and effort to really get in touch with how you’re feeling.

If you are in a long-term, committed relationship or marriage, talk to you partner about possibly trying something new – it doesn’t have to be earth-shattering but could be as small or inconsequential as trying a new restaurant.

Spiritual Growth

The Hermit points you to the fact that you are unlikely to grow in the near future by running around like crazy. This is a time to stop, hold still, open your mind, and listen to the quiet, small voice inside that helps you to be in touch with your spirit. And the spirit that is in all things.

Work and Career

Here you need to contemplate, and perhaps investigate what the truth is when it comes to your work and your career. Don’t jump to conclusions and don’t allow yourself to believe that you already know exactly what is going on. Give people the benefit of any doubts, and ask questions. In other words make sure you think before you act.

If you feel that you have been wronged at work in some way – think it through and/or talk it through with a neutral third party. It may simply be that your nerves are just a bit taut.

Message from Spirit

Take time to be still and just listen to the life that is in you and all around you. Every moment truly is a gift so slow down enough to savor it. Be childlike and curious. You don’t know it all and you don’t need to. Be assured that nobody else knows it all either. If you can, get out in “green spaces” and enjoy a little nature time. This too can make you feel better and more in tune with the world.
