Clarity of purpose when consulting the Tarot is really important, perhaps critically important. If you are new to tarot reading though, you might not understand why. Professional tarot readers will be well aware of the pitfalls of not asking a question clearly. Most experienced amateurs will also have a good idea why. Beginners who simply read for themselves or family and friends may not see the pitfalls. They are not instantly obvious.

Some Examples of Badly Phrased Tarot Questions

Let’s consider an often-asked question: “Will I find true love? On the face of it, it seems simple and straightforward. Some spreads such as the “Will I Find True Love?” spread itself address timing and other factors directly. Others, such as the popular “Magical Love” spread, do not.

In addition, some readers prefer to use something like the “Celtic Cross” rather than a predefined spread. Either way, problems can arise if the question itself is not properly thought out.

A client asking #1 “Will I find true love?” is not the same as #2 “Will I find true love (meaning this year)?” which is not the same as #3 “Will I find true love (meaning when I go on my summer cruise)?” and so on. See what we’re getting at?

The answer to #1 will almost certainly be “yes” and that is what the “Celtic Cross” would tell you if that was how you asked the question as there are usually many potential true loves out there for each of us.

Now if what someone has in mind is #2, or #3, but the question is phrased as per #1 then the “yes” answer could be wrong because they won’t meet “this year” and “nothing” will happen on the cruise. For scenarios #2 and #3 the answer should be “no.”

Professional or Amateur

If you are a professional reader a client is not likely to be very happy when that predicted meeting doesn’t take place. They may well not come back because you were “wrong.” Even if you are only reading for friends and/or family you will lose credibility when your prediction doesn’t pan out.

Nothing is set in stone; any reader knows that but someone you are reading for will expect you to get it right. That’s human nature and you are the psychic. By the same token they will expect you to “know” what they had in mind without having to tell you! So, if a client (or friend or whoever) asks the question do make sure you know exactly what they have in mind before you ask the question of the tarot cards.

Using a predefined spread like the “Will I Find True Love?” doesn’t have quite the same problem because it looks at the “next” potential candidate and considers the “when” of it all.

Even if you are simply reading for yourself (and many do despite the potential pitfalls) clarity of question is still critical. Ask the question of the cards clearly and accurately with true clarity of purpose and your readings themselves will be more accurate.
