General Introduction
The 4 of Swords is a clear indication of the need for time and space alone. Sometimes this may be you that needs it, or it may be others within your life.
Everybody needs alone time. If too many calls are being made upon you and people are pushing too hard for your time and attention then it is a time for you to draw some boundaries. Don’t hesitate to do so.
If, on the other hand, it is someone saying no to you then you should take them at their word and cease pushing. It will only be temporary and continuing to push could easily backfire on you.
On occasion the 4 of Swords can indicate that someone you know is going away for a time and the reason for doing so could be almost anything. Holiday, hospital, work, even jail! Whatever the reason it is only for a while.
Friends and Family
If it seems that your friends and perhaps even your family don’t have as much time for you as they once did then you need to understand that this is not personal.
It’s not that they don’t care for you, or like you anymore but simply that they have so much going on that at this particular moment in time they just don’t have the time or energy spare to hang out the way it used to be. It will change so in the meantime respect their boundaries and wait for things to get back on an even keel.
Similarly, but the flip side of the coin, if it is you that has so much going on that you don’t have the time or energy spare then you will need to say so and draw boundaries of your own. You may be under pressure right now but remember that these are your friends and they are your family so you don’t have to be short with them when you say no.

Love and Relationships
The 4 of Swords is a so-so card to get if you are currently in a relationship. On the downside it indicates everything is not as peachy as it once was, but on the upside it is telling you that all is not lost.
If you are feeling somewhat out of step with your partner at the moment then obviously you should discuss that with them. It is important for you to remember though that it is not their job to make you happy. That’s your job.
This sort of disconnect happens to most people at some time so don’t panic, it may be that you will both may benefit from some time apart. Make the effort to take a break from each other and see how things look once you’re refreshed.
It’s not a great card to get if you are looking for love as it usually means that you’re not going to be successful just yet. Interestingly, the Tarot will often tell you that you are being way too specific in what you are looking for in a partner, but the appearance of the four is telling you that you’re not being specific enough.
Make sure you know exactly what you are looking for in love. It may row out a lot of contenders by doing so, but then, they wouldn’t have worked out anyway. You will meet someone.
Spiritual Growth
You have too much on your plate, too many calls on your time, and there are simply not enough hours in the day for you to get everything done that needs to be done. That’s the physical side of your life.
And it means you have no time and energy left for the metaphysical side. You need to find a way to take a break and make the effort to feed your spiritual self. It is starving and crying out for attention.
Work and Career
If you are in work then the 4 of Swords is a clear indication that you need a break. Most civilized countries recognize the need for workers to take regular breaks and accordingly give a generous holiday allowance measured in weeks rather than days. Take some time off and get away from it all.
Unfortunately that is not the case everywhere even though it ought to be. If you fall into this category then it may be the best you can hope for is a weekend away. If so, then make sure you take it.
Either way it is a case of needing to recharge and get things in perspective. Things are not likely to be going as well as you would like at work and it may be that impatience is creeping into your working life.
If you can’t be patient even after a break, or you still don’t understand the need for patience with the process then you might want to consider looking for a different job which would suit you better.
If you are looking for work then the four means your search is going to continue and you need to be patient with what is going on. Temporary low paying jobs can be quite easy and quick to get. Anything else is subject to longer scrutiny and takes time. Often more than it should but you need to understand it’s not personal, it’s just the way it is.
