Tarot Pip Cards of the Minor Arcana

2 of Cups

Many tarot readers struggle mightily with understanding and reading the “pip” cards, and some are not even familiar with the term. When someone refers to the pips, they mean the numbered cards in the deck.

The key to understanding and using the pip tarot is just that: the numbers. You don’t have to be a genius at numerology to see the implications. For example the two of any suit will generally refer to a relationship of some kind with just one other person.

Just as with every other tarot card, you will over time develop personal interpretations of the pip cards that work for you. If, for example, the five of pentacles keeps making you think of boredom; then boredom needs to be part of how you interpret that card.

It’s critically important that you keep an open mind as you are learning.

What Are the Pip Cards in Concept?

Aces are usually about new beginnings. They are included in the pip cards because traditionally they can be valued as one or eleven. Aces, however, are covered in their own article here.

Twos usually related to relationships. They aren’t always good relationships and they’re not usually romantic, either.

Threes generally point to a level of group involvement. Pay attention to the suit here. With the three of cups you may find that it nearly always indicates a reunion of some kind. It doesn’t always indicate a reunion with a group.

Fours have an energy of a moment of stasis and quiet in many cases. Don’t overemphasize these.
