General Interpretation

4 of Cups

The 4 of Cups is a card that reminds you that what you have in the present should not be overlooked because you are too focused on the future.

Wishful thinking is all very well and to an extent there is no harm in it provided that you are not wishing your life away because of it. Its appearance is a gentle reminder that you are living in the here and now and that is where your main focus should be. Don’t overlook what you have by obsessing over what you don’t have.

Friends and Family

This is a time that you need to be careful about what you say and how you say it. Most times friends and family are close enough to you to be able to take constructive criticism if it is justified.

The keyword here is justified. You may think that you are justified but the truth may be somewhat different. The 4 of Cups is a warning that you may be trying to get people to be who you think they should be rather than allowing them to be who they are.

You have the right to live your life the way that you want to. They have the very same right and you should be mindful that just because their way isn’t your way doesn’t mean they are wrong.

Love and Relationships

If you are looking for love this card is a reminder that Prince Charming on a white horse does not exist. It is all well and good having an ideal partner in mind but if you are not very careful you will end up lonely and alone. There is no such thing as an ideal man or an ideal woman. The longer you make your list of attributes you want in a partner the less chance you have of finding them. Remember, you are not perfect either.

If you are in a committed relationship the appearance of the two of cups will almost certainly mean that you are trying to change  your partner in some way because they don’t match up to your idea of who you think they should be.

Sometimes, that attempt to change them may be justified for their own good. When this card appears though it implies that you are trying to change them for reasons that only suit you rather than them. Embrace the difference between you because that is where the true strength of a partnership lies.

Spiritual Growth

The chances are you are heading in the wrong direction at present. There is an element of “poor, poor, pitiful me” involved and you need to change this. It is time to rethink where you are and where you should be going. You need to appreciate what you have in the present to make further progress in the future.

Work and Career

If you are in a job that is leaving you unfulfilled and boring you to tears then this card is a pointed reminder to be thankful for what you have. It’s no good obessing over how things would be if you were in your perfect job because if you don’t have the wherewithal or opportunity to find it then the path you are on is a very negative one.

A very wise lady – Mary Engelbreit – once said… “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” The 4 of Cups is telling you to do just that. Be thankful for what you have.

If you are looking for a job and are struggling to find what you want then it will benefit you to reassess the parameters of what you are looking for. This card suggests that you are being a little too picky and that you should consider more fully what is available rather than what isn’t. Any job you take does not have to be permanent; it can be simply a stepping stone.

Message from Spirit

The message is very simply: be thankful for what you have and don’t waste your life worrying about what you don’t have.
