General Introduction

4 of Pentacles

The 4 of Pentacles is somewhat negative in connotation. It points to fear and insecurity and whereas this can be in almost any aspect of life it very often refers to money and financial matters. Being fearful is not going to help you so perhaps a change in the way you look at things is called for.

It can also mean that you are clinging to something that has perhaps outgrown its usefulness and that to continue doing so will prove to be unhealthy. Clinging to something or someone just because it makes you feel more secure does not, of course, mean that security is actually there.

It could be anything that is being referenced but it will often be a relationship. if it is not you doing the clinging then perhaps someone is clinging to you in that way.

Friends and Family

It is likely that family in particular but possibly friends as well are clinging to you more so than is good for either them or you. There is nothing wrong with a family being close but that doesn’t mean that you have to be living in each other’s pockets every day of the week.

There needs to be balance and respect for boundaries and the appearance of the four would indicate that this is not happening. An example would be you going off to college looking forward to your new found freedom as a participating adult in the world and then Mom or Dad phones you every single day without fail.

Whereas this behavior will primarily be parents clinging to their children it is possible that siblings could be involved instead. Similarly it is possible that old friends will cling in the same way.

Whichever is the case it is not healthy for them and it’s not healthy for you. Something needs to change.

Love and Relationships

If you are looking for love then the 4 of Pentacles is perhaps not quite as negative as you might think. It does not preclude success but it is an indication that you will have to step outside your comfort zone to make this happen.

That may well include having to rethink exactly what a relationship and love is both need space as well as care and attention to flourish.

This is not a good card to see if you are in a relationship and particularly if it is a committed relationship. It indicates that everything is unbalanced and for any relationship not only to survive but to flourish there has to be balance.

Just because you love someone doesn’t mean that they have to be by your side 24/7. There has to be freedom or else everything becomes stifled. Having someone by your side 24/7 does not make your relationship or its future any safer than if they were only by your side at weekends.

If you are the one doing the clinging then you need to back off and allow your partner some space and freedom. If you are the one that is being clung to then you need to consider just how much longer you should allow it to continue.

Someone once said “If you love something set it free,” this is the card that tells you to do just that.

Spiritual Growth

The 4 of Pentacles is telling you that you are not in the healthiest of places spiritually. Old beliefs, or old ways of doing things are holding you back. You are clinging on to ways that will no longer benefit you.

You need to try and embrace different ways of doing things and perhaps alter your belief system to enable further growth. Letting go of old ways is not always easy and change can be scary but you will benefit if you do so.

Work and Career

Are you in a dead-end job? Are you only there because you need the money? If so, then perhaps you need to consider making some changes.

Ideally you need to change your job and find something that will be far more fulfilling emotionally and spiritually. If change is not possible and sometimes it isn’t, then you need to look at changes within you that might improve the way you feel.

Mary Engelbreit once said “If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.”

If you are looking for a job then this card is telling you that it might be time to think outside the box. Just because you have always done job A, or job B, doesn’t mean that you couldn’t do job C or job D etc. If your current search is proving fruitless then try something different.

Whichever is the case, in work or out of work you need to make a plan for change and put it into action.

Message from Spirit

Give some thought as to exactly what it is that you are afraid of. Fear can nearly always be conquered but you cannot conquer it until you face it.
